How to Find Clients as an Independent Truck Dispatcher

One of the biggest challenges you’ll face as an independent truck dispatcher is finding clients to work with. It can be tough to get your business off the ground without a steady stream of trucking companies hiring you to handle their freight. Let’s explore effective strategies for attracting clients and how embracing these techniques can propel your business forward.

Clients For Truck Dispatchers

Importance of Truck Dispatchers in Trucking and Transportation

The Pivotal Role of Freight Dispatchers in the Transportation Industry

Freight dispatchers stand as the indispensable and often unsung champions of the transportation sector. These pivotal figures shoulder the responsibility of planning, coordinating, and supervising the routes and deliveries for trucks, consequently ensuring the smooth flow of goods between different points. In their role, they manage the timely delivery of cargo by adeptly managing interactions with truck drivers, customers (motor carriers), freight brokers, and shipping companies. Moreover, as the critical touchpoint for queries and concerns about deliveries, they uphold a high standard of customer service. Their duties also may encompass the thorough review of dispatch documents including bills of lading (freight bills), load confirmations, and shipping permits before a truck driver embarks on his or her journey.

Vital Functions of Freight Dispatchers in the Logistics Industry

Freight dispatchers are undeniably the lifeblood of the logistics industry. Their everyday tasks are centered around orchestrating schedules, and coordinating the dispatch of freight by truck drivers, making them an integral link in the industry’s supply chain management. By ensuring equipment availability, the flawless and punctual execution of deliveries, monitoring the departure and arrival times of shipments, maintaining comprehensive records of delivery timings, and modifying routes when necessary, they play an instrumental role in the industry’s smooth functioning.

The Essential Qualities for a Successful Career as a Freight Dispatcher

Succeeding as a freight dispatcher necessitates robust organization and communication skills. An eye for detail, analytical thinking, adept multitasking, and comprehension of safety regulations are also critical attributes. Top-tier customer service abilities are indispensable, as they enable dispatchers to create exceptional customer experiences and build enduring relationships with both company drivers and carrier company.

The two most significant skills for independent freight dispatchers are computer literacy and superior communication skills. Proficient computer usage is integral for tasks such as locating loads on load boards, completing assorted forms and paperwork, and efficiently dispatching every truck driver under their management. Communication skills are pivotal during negotiations on behalf of motor carriers with freight agents to acquire load information, resolve challenges that arise with loads, articulate value propositions, and build personal connections with potential customers. These skills underscore the diverse responsibilities of a freight dispatcher and emphasize the necessity for continuous learning and skills enhancement in this profession.

Educational and Interpersonal Prerequisites for an Independent Dispatcher

To secure a role as a freight dispatcher, the primary educational requirement is a high school diploma or its equivalent GED. A supplemental certification in logistics can offer a competitive edge, although it isn’t mandatory. The position is well-suited to individuals who are personable, possess excellent customer service skills, and enjoy interaction with like-minded professionals such as drivers and customers. Furthermore, the role demands individuals who are detail-oriented, capable of multitasking efficiently, and can maintain composure in a dynamic environment. These qualities, combined with a commitment to safety management, are key in paving successful career paths in this field.

Hello!

In recent weeks we have discovered a network of fraudulent offshore websites which sell (in most cases) stolen training materials. Soon, we will post a video detailing our investigation. However, in the meantime, you can take the following steps to protect yourself against the perpetrators:

1.    First of all, KNOW WHO YOU ARE BUYING FROM! You will have to play a detective for a moment, but it is essential that you are purchasing your training from a real (and preferably reputable) company. If you don’t, you are at risk of providing your payment information to an anonymous seller who may charge you without authorization or use your personal data to harm you.

2.    How do you determine legitimacy of a seller? Most legitimate sellers will post who owns the website on the footer of the page. Also, their Terms and Conditions (real business will have those on their website) should outline the name and location of the business. Vague wording such as “we are a dispatch company with 20 years of experience” is not a description of the business. If business name is not posted on the website, you should be suspicious. Ask for legal name of the business and their address as it appears on Secretar y of State registration.

3.    Once you have the name of the business make sure to verify registration of this company with an appropriate Secretary of State website (each state has their own). If such business is not registered with Secretary of State, you should be concerned. If business is registered with Secretary of State, try reaching out to this business directly (not through the website selling you training) to confirm their affiliation with a training program.

4.    Look for additional information to confirm legitimacy of a seller. For example: many training sellers state that they are accredited by Better Business Bureau (BBB). Yet they do not have a digital seal from BBB. Or they may have a seal, however, you can not click on it to view the profile of the company on BBB website. This should be another “red flag” and an indication that someone is trying to scam you!

5.    Do not fall for empty promises of job placement. If such promise is present, demand a written contract outlining placement conditions.

6.    Do not fall for pictures or videos of a dispatching “guru” and video reviews. Often, people portrayed in such footage have nothing to do with dispatching. Instead, find out the name of their Dispatching business and confirm it is an actual business involved with truck dispatching.

7.    Request curriculum for the course you are about to pay for. Most legitimate trainers will post a curriculum of their training program on their website. You as a student need to know what lessons are included and what exactly they cover. Again, do not accept vague responses, ask for the list of included lessons.

There are many other technical factors you can take into account, such as when and where domain for the website was registered, if owner of the website is trying to hide location of the website and so on. If you need help determining these, please reach out to us and our tech team will check on this information for you and help you to determine if you might be dealing with a scam. You can submit suspicious URL on our Support page. Do not become a victim of a scam: avoid paying for low quality or plagiarized content.

Thank you for being vigilant!
